BEACON'S BACKYARD VEGETABLE GARDEN NOW PLANTED

May 2021

Behind our Big House is a small, 50' x 50' vegetable garden where we have planted tomatoes, cucumbers and scotch bonnet peppers.

Our little garden is a show piece and training area, close to the main building for our visitors to see and enjoy and for our staff to become familiar with the propagation and care of these plants.

The produce from our little garden will also provide a bit of income for our charity!

ONE MONTH OF GROWTH IN OUR VEGETABLE GARDEN

Jun 2021
One month in Veg Garden.png

Our cucumbers, peppers and tomatoes have been in our vegetable garden for about a month now and they are doing well.  Especially the fast growing cucumber which has put out blossoms and even has a good number of large cucumbers on the vines!

The same can be said for the pak choy that is growing in the Green House.  In a month they have developed nice big leaves and should be ready for harvest in a few more weeks!

MONTH TWO IN THE VEGETABLE GARDEN

Jul 2021

Our cucumbers, scotch bonnet peppers and tomatoes have been in the vegetable garden for two months now.

We have been harvesting cucumbers every week and sold quite a bit considering we only planted a small number of vines.  The quality and size of the cucumbers we harvested was excellent and we will definitely plant this variety again.  But, as expected, the productivity of the plants has declined now so we will soon be removing the vines to make room for another crop.

The tomatoes and peppers are getting bigger and are now flowering.  There are some small tomatoes and peppers on the bushes and we hope that our pepper and tomato crops are as good as our cucumber harvest was!

NEW CROPS TO GO INTO VEGGIE GARDEN

Sept 2021

Once the productivity of the cucumber plants declined we removed them to make space for a crop of carrots.  The seeds have been sown directly into the soil and we are using soaker hoses to make sure all the seeds receive water.  We are anxiously awaiting the seedlings to emerge as this will be our first carrot crop!

Since our last crop of cucumbers did so well, we have planted another set of seedlings.  This crop of cucumbers has gone into a different spot in the vegetable garden so that we don't encourage the build-up of soil-borne diseases.  The seedlings are now being tied to string trellises to keep the vines off the ground.

PLANTING BEANS IN THE VEGETABLE GARDEN

Mar 2022

To explore our success with a new crop, and to add nitrogen to a depleted area of the Vegetable Garden, we have planted rows of string beans.

The seedlings are doing well and we hope to harvest soon!
