PREPARING FOR CHRISTMAS SORREL

Aug 2021
2021.08.31 - planting sorrel.jpg

Beacon Farms is planting sorrel for the Christmas season this year.  The 100 or so seedlings will be planted in between our young coconut seedlings.

This made sense to us since the irrigation system is already in place along the lines of coconut palms.  All that need to be done is to get the weeds out and plant the seedlings.

We hope that our sorrel bushes will have produced the florets used to make sorrel drink in time for the holidays.

Beacon Farms has a few Dragon Fruit plants that produce a wonderful red-skinned and hot pink-fleshed fruit.

We have taken cuttings and potted them out in the hopes of increasing our production of this delicious, refreshing fruit!

EXPECTING A GOOD TOMATO HARVEST

Dec 2021
2021.12.15 - tomatoes.jpg

We initially struggled a bit with our tomatoes.  Most likely we made the mistake of planting them too close together on our first attempt.

This time, with proper spacings and by keeping up with the pruning, we seem to have gotten a decent amount of tomatoes to set.

The cooler temperatures at this time of year may have also been helpful!

These are large slicing tomatoes and we can't wait to taste them.  In the future we can look at growing other types of tomatoes such as the smaller cherry tomatoes.

This crop just adds to the list of vegetables and fruits that Beacon Farms can offer!

NEW DRAGON FRUIT FIELD

Feb 2022
2022.02.18 - dragon fruit.HEIC

We have now set up a dedicated area for dragon fruit propagation in our commercial fields.

These plants were produced from the cuttings we started late last year.  They are now ready to go out into the field where they will take up to 9 months to produce fruit.

We have planted a total of 102 cuttings so we expect quite a lot of fruit by the end of the year!

COMMERCIAL GROWING OF NEW CROPS

Mar 2022

With our fields expanding, we are now able to plant crops on a larger scale.  We have begun by setting up a small planting area in Commercial field A.  This portion of the commercial fields has been tilled with the rock crusher, amended with compost, sulfur and chicken manure and now holds a variety of crops.

We have planted out rows of tomatoes, seasoning peppers and scotch bonnets.  And, for the first time, we have planted corn, okra and sweet peppers.

This diversity in crops will expand our customer base as we hope to a little of everything on offer!

We will soon have our Research Garden planted with some new things such as cabbage, eggplants, zucchini, radishes and salad beets.  If they do well in the Research Garden, they can be expanded out into the Commercial Fields.
