 TEMPORARY TOBACCO DRYING BARN

What do we do with all that flavorful tobacco that we grow? Well, first it is harvested. Then it must be dried and cured before it can be used to roll local premium cigars.

Using the examples of the traditional tobacco drying houses from the around the Caribbean as a blueprint, our resourceful staff planned and constructed a temporary drying barn, thatched with coconut leaves, to meet our immediate needs.

 INSIDE OUR TEMPORARY

 TOBACCO DRYING BARN

We harvested our first crop of tobacco in February of 2020 and began hanging the plants while the temporary tobacco drying barn was still under construction.

The drying barn is essential to drying the tobacco properly.  It keeps the harvested tobacco at the right temperature and humidity so that we end up with cigar wrapper leaves that have the necessary strength to produce high quality cigars Cayman Cigars

However, this barn is only temporary. It was thatched with coconut fronds which were readily available and quick to thatch with.

Eventually we will build a larger more elaborate drying house thatched with stronger, more durable Silver Thatch leaves.

Our permanent Silver Thatched drying house will be a highlight of our future Beacon Farms tours!  â€‹
