TOBACCO SORTING, DRYING & CURING
After our Tobacco crop has been planted, harvested, and cured in the drying barn the next step in preparing the leaves for cigar production is sorting and fermenting.
THE CRAFT OF CREATING RICHER
MORE COMPLEX FLAVOURS
First the dried leaves are sorted into the various types: Ligero, Seco and Volado.
Then each type is bundled together into hands consisting of 15 – 25 leaves and stacked into 'pilones'. The weight of the tobacco generates heat, up to 100 degrees Fahrenheit. This heat releases ammonia and other unpalatable organic compounds found in tobacco leaves. At Beacon Farms we monitor the level of ammonia released from pilones.

After the ammonia levels drop and the temperature reduces, the tobacco could be rolled with a little further preparation. But the longer the tobacco ferments, (sometimes for several years) the richer the flavour of the tobacco and the better the cigars.
