In early May, 2020 we made our first real attempt at growing a Mangel Beet (Beta vulgaris) crop.

 MATURE TUBERS

Mangel Beet, also known by the lovely name ‘Mangelwurzel’, produce nutritious, edible tubers. They can be harvested for human consumption like regular beets, but their primary use is as a dietary supplement for livestock, such as goats, cattle, horses and poultry. They are especially recommended as feed for milk cows and young animals.

Locally, livestock are fed predominately with imported feed. Mangel Beets, being high in fiber and carbohydrates, would make a nutritious supplement to the processed livestock feed.

When left to fully mature in the field, they can grow quite large, some weighing in at over 20lbs!
